The constant controversy concerning the use of certain four-letter words should, in all fairness, be tempered with something said in the defence of many of them. Specifically, our vocabulary contains some that are useful, descriptive, powerful, and even necessary. In fact, it might be said that some four-letter words helped build the world around us. For an example, words such as “work,” “home” and “love” all played a part in shaping our lives.
Extending this thought into the world of music, we could go on to say that it, too, has four letter words in its foundation. To list a few of the important ones: “note,” “tone,” “sing” — and where would the world of music and “song” be without “Como”?!
We think you’ll agree that over the years the name Como has become synonymous with the enjoyment of music we all love to hear. The sensitive and sweet dulcet tones of his melodious voice always seem to prompt memories, thoughts, and moods to fit all seasons. Although much has been said concerning Perry’s vocal technique — his phrasing, quality, interpretation, control and concentration — not enough has been said concerning the mood he can conjure during the first eight bars of the song.
In this, his latest album you will be treated to a generous helping of the moods that Perry prompts. This is definitely one of Perry’s warmest presentations of mostly new ballads, as well as a few numbers that have been carefully selected so as to be compatible with the moods of the music on this album.
You’ll understand what we mean as you listen to Perry glide into the poignant lyric on side A, as he sings the first song, What’s One More Time. The reminiscent mood continues into the next haunting ballad, which is entitled, So It Goes. This is followed by a slight change of pace novelty tune, featuring the Como treatment to a bit of up-tempo music Here Comes That Song Again.
Next, a song you’ll recall if you are a moviegoer. This is a sentimental rendition of Goodbye for Now, the theme music from the motion picture “Reds.” The final number of this side is another ballad to prompt thoughts of reminiscence — The Second Time.
Side B opens with a sentimental lyric dedicated to the memory of Jason, a very special little boy. George Fischoff provided the pretty thought behind the following ballad As My Love for You. The next presentation by Perry is a nostalgic remembrance dedicated to a Fancy Dancer. This is followed by Perry giving us his lyrical answer to the question, Is She the Only Girl in the World.
For his closing number Mr. Como sings a tribute to the ladies with sentimental words that carry the same one line thought as the title You Are So Beautiful to me.
In this era of food, data and word processors, it’s reassuring as well as awfully nice to know that the mellifluous voice of Mr. Como will never be replaced by machine.
