Having hit records is one thing: having a street named after you quite another and a rare occurrence in the world of popular music. Yet Third Avenue, the street in Pennsylvania where he was born, was eventually re-named Perry Como Avenue; quite a happening for this one-time barber of Italian decent who hit the record charts for the first time back in 1945 and whose appeal in the 1970's shows no sign of waning. Today, in fact, his appeal with record buyers of all ages continues to rise and Mr. C. is a regular chart parade resident. Perry Como has achieved such a following by being a true all-rounder in show business, conquering just about every medium with a consistency that never fails to surprise his contemporaries. His start in show business came in the mid-thirties when he abandoned the barber's practice to sing with Freddie Carlone's band. He toured America's mid-west with Carlone for many years until a rival bandleader lured him to richer pastures. By 1943 Perry Como han landed his first recording contract and followed it up by being signed to a major Hollywood studio for whom he made several successful pictures. His conquest of television in the early 'fifties has since passed into show business legend and it's true to say that Perry Como's easy, relaxed style of baritone has sparked off many imitators, yet few have met with his kind of success. On this album the voice of this unique performer takes such songs as "Days of Wine and Roses", "What kind of Fool am I?" and "Try to Remember" and gilds them with vocal performances that clearly demonstrate his artistry -- the kind of artistry that warrants having a street named after you.
