A flight of fancy with twelve
great songs sung in the unmistakably relaxed style of Perry Como. As
Mel Torme is quoted as saying "Perry is technically one of the most
immaculate singers in our business".
But what of the man who is our
courier on this 'flight' — what is he like, what lies
behind that lazy, easy going facade?
Of his early years we know that
he was a barber and sang professionally for the first time in 1933
and joined Ted Weems' band in 1936. He started recording as a solo
artist for RCA Records in 1943 and has in that time, had several Top
Ten successes both in the U.K., and U.S.A.. Perry was one of the
first recording artists to have his very own weekly T.V. programme
which was the first of the American T.V. shows to be shown on a
regular basis in Britain.
The famous lazy manner was
developed by Perry on the T.V. show as a means of keeping himself
and those around him calm; he maintains he is not basically as
relaxed as he appears and that he is really a perfectionist who
likes to be in control of his audience.
In private life he is a man of
simple tastes, especially proud of his wife and family. Never one
for the public eye he has deliberately fought shy of ant
interference with his home life. In his own words "If I had to make
a choice between being a famous singer and enjoying my wife and
children — well — I wouldn't want any part of singing or the fame or
the money".
Fortunately for us he never had
to make the choice and with his down to earth philosophies and his
continuing success as a singer we shall be seeing the neme of Como
in the charts for years to come.
