The professional stands out
from the rest because he makes a lifetime's work seem easy -
but that comes under the " Art that conceals art" heading and few
singers better epitomise the saying than Mr. C. Perry Como.
He's been confounding us all,
with his easy, relaxed style ever since the mid-forties when he was
notching up an impressive list of hit records and still, in those
early days, making it all seem so easy and casual.
Now, in the seventies, Mr. Como
is finding fresh acceptance for his songs and his personality,
neither of which seem to age or lose their appeal. How he does it is
something that doesn't really seem to matter when you listen to
"Catch A Falling Star", "Delaware", "Don't Let The Stars Get In Your
Eyes" and the other Como classics that grace this album.
Perry Como, whose name now
finds itself on the map of Pennsylvania as Perry Como Avenue has
come a long way since the day when he worked as a barber, auditioned
successfully for Freddie Carlone's band and later gained a sizeable
break with Ted Weems Orchestra. In 1943 Como signed with Victor
records, the company he has stayed with ever since. Film roles,
television shows and concert appearances have since added to the
Como success story and during 1974 he visited London for a special
midnight performance at the London Palladium, and was invited back
for the Royal Variety Show.
And whether he's singing the
obvious clever songs like "Delaware" or a Broadway classic like
"Some Enchanted Evening" the result is always perfection, Mr. Como
style . . . easy, relaxed and just about as professional as it can
be.
