MONAURAL
1955

PERRY COMO started off in show business as a barber -- that is to say he became noted for his vocal  prowess while snipping the hair of his townfolk in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. His first man-size professional job in music was with the Ted Weems outfit in 1936 when he was twenty-four, and he stayed with Weems until the band broke up in 1942. Weary of wandering around the country as an appendage to an orchestra, Perry went back to barbering and Canonsburg, but the agents bombarded him with tempting contracts until he finally succumbed to the offer of a steady radio job in New York. As soon as the programme went on the air Perry began registering solid hits in theatres and night-clubs. There was no holding him when his records appeared; his first, Goodbye Sue, was waxed in 1943, and in 1945 he made his first million-seller Till the End of Time. In a single week in 1946, four million Como recordings were sold, a unique achievement in disc history.
