Lehár, Franz (1870-1948), Hungarian composer, born in Komárom. Encouraged in music by the Czech composer Antonín Dvoôák, he was bandmaster of various military bands from 1890 to 1902. He then became conductor of the Theater an der Wien. His first operetta, Kukuschka, was produced in 1896; more than 30 operettas followed. In 1905 in Vienna, he produced his greatest success, The Merry Widow. His other works include the operettas The Count of Luxembourg (1909) and The Land of Smiles (1929) and the grand opera Giuditta (1934).
