Surprisingly, it's not generally known that the original recordings for Perry's very first Christmas album date back to 1946 when it was first released as a 4 record 78-rpm disc Musical Smart Set. All of these songs were recorded in August, 1946, but one song, "O Little Town of Bethlehem", was later dropped from the set and replaced by "White Christmas" which was recorded in 1947. In 1956, the revised collection was combined with another collection, "Around the Christmas Tree", recorded in 1953, under the original 1946 album title, to form Perry's first full RCA Victor 12" LP Christmas album. This album was reissued under the budget RCA Camden label in 1961 less one additional song, "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town", and for reasons unexplained it was this version chosen for remastering to compact disc. The compact disc could easily have contained all of the original songs within it's format length. |
